Richmond Gate Hotel Review

I recently stayed at the Richmond Gate Hotel, on 12th October, with my lovely friends Sarah and Sarah for not only our yearly girls spa get away but for our Miss T’s hen!

The booking was made through Spabreaks.com by one of my friends and actually she found that experience pretty bad, so we didn’t have very high expectations of our stay. But we really couldn’t have been more wrong, we really had the most perfect stay from check in to check out! The service from every member of staff was 5* and although the hotel is currently under-going renovation, having been taken over by Harbour Hotel Group, this didn’t have any impact on our stay at all.

The best way I can describe this hotel is that it is a boutique hotel but on a big scale. The décor is truly delightful and starts with the vibrant yellow front door! Then straight in to the lobby is a kooky main feature of a tree/light, which is an excellent design and talking point and great for photos and the rest of the interior design does not disappoint, even down to the small but brilliant touch of a wall of colourful wellies for guests to borrow for a walk around the gorgeous Bushy Park! The reception staff on check in and check out were really friendly and professional, and on check-out we were asked for any feedback we had good or bad. To be honest there was nothing bad from my point of view! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We had been booked in to a suite as there were three of us, which was great because usually when we go away for our annual trip we have to have 2 rooms and one person always ends up on their own. This suite was perfect, great touches in the design – I loved the deer head wardrobe door handles and the thoughtful bathroom amenities (which included cotton pads, cotton balls and cotton buds). The room was well appointed, with a huge bed, sofa bed, flat screen tv, and fridge being nice additions.

Our stay included a treatment at the newly refurbished spa, and we all decided to have a back massage.

The spa is modern, beautifully designed and the staff are so nice, friendly and professional. My massage was just about perfect, the therapist was attentive to my needs and the pressure was just right. I was literally almost asleep by the end of the treatment! I mentioned to my friends afterwards that I had managed to completely blank out my mind and thoughts and just totally relax, and that is the sign of a fantastic massage treatment!

After our treatments we used the other facilities – Steam Room and Sauna. Unfortunately there were young children having swimming lessons at the same time so we couldn’t use the pool, but we were happy enough to just use the steam and sauna. There is currently no Jacuzzi but we were informed that as part of the renovations this will be added during the updates.

After getting ourselves glammed up we went down to the restaurant for a 3 course meal. The menu had some great choices and we were informed that they are trialling the menu choices ahead of the official opening launch in November. The restaurant staff were excellent, so helpful when we were choosing our meals and giving us recommendations. Myself and one of my friends went for Lobster Arancini to start and my other friend went for the Scallops. There were 5 arancini balls in the portion and they were quite literally the best I have ever had! Beautifully cooked and a good amount of lobster in nice sized pieces, so much flavour! These were served with a saffron aioli which was also very good. I would eat these over and over again, highly recommended. Sarah loved her scallops and would eat them again!

For mains myself and one of my friends ordered the bone in rump steak, which came with chips, rocket salad and a bernaise sauce. I don’t eat salad leaves so I ordered a side of green vegetables. Well I have never seen such a huge steak! I ordered medium rare, and it was cooked to perfection – no steak knife even needed!! I definatley could have gone without the side order of green veggies as I hardly ate any of them, the steak was so filling and try as I might I just couldn’t finish it! If I was going home after the meal instead of staying at the hotel I would’ve asked for it to be boxed and taken it home! My other friend had dover sole, and was very impressed with that too. She is a vegetarian (but eats fish/seafood) and was really happy to see that there were lots of really nice options for non-meat eaters.

I couldn’t eat another bite so instead of dessert I had a Black Forest Espresso Martini! Wow it was amazing, a perfect end to a perfect meal! One friend had a trifle desert and the other was too full for anything else.

After a good night sleep we all went down for breakfast to the conservatory part of the restaurant, overlooking a garden area, which I am sure will look beautiful once the renovation is complete. The breakfast was nice, however when ordering a full English breakfast you expect a “proper” breakfast – the full English consisted of 1 sausage, 1 mushroom, 2 poached eggs, half grilled tomato, 1 slice of black pudding (which I don’t eat) and a very small dip/sauce/butter sized dish with baked beans (which I also don’t eat). So after this we were all still pretty hungry. One friend had the same as me and the other had the vegetarian full English, but was not very happy with this at all – she said the spinach and poached eggs had not been sufficiently drained and so had left lots of water on the plate and her poached eggs were a bit “snotty”, which for some people is fine, but she prefers them a bit firmer.

We all had some pastries, which were delicious and some overnight oats.

Then all too soon it was time to check out. This process was very quick and easy and the reception staff member was really friendly and professional and asked us for our feedback on everything, which we did pass on. Mostly about the size of the steak and how it may be better for the bottom line of the restaurant if they served a smaller portion! We also passed on how delicious it was and how much we enjoyed our meal, and how great the first class restaurant staff were.

He even took pictures for us when we were leaving as we were struggling a bit to do it ourselves, he really went the extra mile and left us with a great lasting impression.

I really do recommend this hotel for any occasion and cannot wait to return again and again!
